A bit of a rarity, this original 1920s heavily fringed hand crocheted evening dress, in inky black silky rayon yarn with stepped Art Deco design. I’ve shown it both ways, as I think it’s probably designed with v front but you could easily wear it backwards for v back which I quite like.

I absolutely love the Art Deco shaping over the hips and thighs. I suspect it was originally worn with a silk slip dress beneath which would be easy to replicate. Previous owner had this for over 40 years, and used to wear it as a top over trousers. I can actually imagine that would work still now, or with some wide silk palazzos (contrasting colour?) for a real Art Deco look!

Three quarter slightly flared sleeves with tassels. I’ve only had a handful of these dresses in the last twenty years (tops seemed to be a more common project for 20s ladies, as I’ve had relatively more of those?) and what I love about them is just how sturdy and wearable they are. The long skirt tassels are amazing, very silky!

Measures:

Laid out flat the top/dress measures:

approx 38” bust and then pretty much straight down

approx 23" from back neckline to bottom of crochet top

Skirt section approx 30" down from waist, to bottom of tassels

Length from nape to hem approx 53"

There is some give in the weave, so sizing is approximate - plus some selvedge (as mentioned below) in the hip area so could be enlarged slightly if desired.

It is shown unclipped on a modern UK 8 approx with a little roominess, and that works well. Bear in mind no closures, so slips on over the head.

Condition:

Immediately wearable (with care of course, given its age), it’s very good.

There are a couple of tiny areas which have been neatly mended but they are very hard to see due to the crochet pattern, and don’t really show up in the photos. I believe it has been taken in to fit the maker once made up as part of the original construction, as original thread has been used at side seams - but there are a couple of extra tassels internally on the selvedges.

Tassels are generally smooth and tangle free as very silky - sleeve fringe is a little more ruffled at the ends, but still neat.
