This is a fabulous example of a very late Victorian/ early Edwardian ‘pigeon pout’ fronted bodice, which has been very carefully preserved. There me of two I have listed.

Created by Jay’s of Regent Street, who were one of the major providers of mourning wear in the City, for a Mrs Weir (as per the waist tape). Here’s a wonderful in depth bit of background on Jay’s; https://londonstreetviews.wordpress.com/2013/09/12/jays-mourning-warehouse/amp/

It’s really quite exquisite, so I have provided plenty of photos. I particularly love the polka dot netting on the ruffled sleeves, and the taffeta elbow details

Measures: it’s miraculously a little too big for my mannequin, with her 25” waist!

Bust approx 38 max with ample cup room as well

Waist 27” to 28” max approx

Hips n/a

Shoulder to hem approx 15”

The sleeves are approx 14” underarm to cuff

Condition:

It appears to be in remarkable condition and very well preserved, with the only two areas of notable damage I noticed being..

- to the silk in the centre front which rested against the body, the placket beneath the hook fasteners (luckily underarm guards have been worn to save the sleeves and armsyces!). It is partially shredded as I assume it was exposed to moisture years ago. It is still all pretty much intact but fragile and damaged.

- There may be the odd loose sequin and tacking stitch, tiny hole, but otherwise it is excellent. I would say however that the silk is over 100 years old now so incredibly delicate - it stands up to gentle handling fine and integrity of net etc good but I don’t know how much dancing it could stand.
