Elegant self stripe black satin Art Deco dress c.1930s

A very elegant 1930s dress, featuring flying panels with ‘pockets’ to the front, and some interesting tuck details to the rear shoulders. 

I think there are elements of an earlier (possibly 20s) dress which have been cleverly adapted in the 1930s - so whilst not in it’s original form is correct for the later decade! 

Neckline has been altered with satin band added, waistline raised, and the side seams adjusted for a more fitted look. Kick pleats have been created at either side of the hem to give a more streamlined 30s look. They’re efficiently done, and could just do with a better press to the seams but otherwise no damage or wear to note. 

I’ve tucked in the two ‘flying’ shoulder panels to the self fabric belt, as I imagine that’s how it was intended. I’ve clipped the belt slightly to give shape on the mannequin, and you could easily adjust to make smaller if you wished. 

Sleeves are elasticated to the cuff and a slight bishop shape as you’d expect. 

No closures, so needs to fit over the head/bust/hips. You could easily open up side and add snaps if desired. I’d say it’s a uk10 or smaller due to access?

Bust 40” (38 plus cup room)

Waist 31” and belt to fit

Hips 40”

Length from nape to hem 46”

nape to waist 15”

underarm to cuff 16”

Belt is currently set at 30” but easy to make smaller. 

Condition: 

As above. No damage, but has been altered. Immediately wearable. 

 
N.B. The label is an interesting one (Walski of Bangor) - the company has evolved from it’s roots in Bangor as drapers and outfitters in 1865, to London based antique dealers and Fabergé specialists. Worth a google!
