elegant 1920s day dress in green grey crepe de chîne with chiffon sleeves - downton
In a fine crepe de chîne, with original silk chiffon sheer sleeves, this is a really elegant little dress from the first quarter of the 20c. It would originally have been worn over a slip and will require a simple one now. Main body of the dress is a dark green grey - please see close up.
It fastens in a typically early 20c style, with hooks to the side of the front bodice for a front opening, with snap below. The bodice features pin ticks and decorative faggoting, with a self fabric band to high waist.
There is a pattern created around the hem, with simple French knots in embroidery silk. This echoed on the sleeve edge - the sleeves themselves are black silk chiffon, and gathered a little at the elbow.
Measures: (to fit smaller - should not be tight)
Bust 38 including cup room.
Waist 30 - high waist
Hips 40 + (gathered over hips so plenty of room)
Length from nape to hem 45”
Condition:
At first glance it is very good to excellent, structurally sound and amazingly the sleeves are completely intact.
On close inspection there are a couple of things to note (photographed)
- a couple of rust spots, which I haven't attempted to remove. Not hugely obvious because of the colour
- some subtle fade or dye variation to collar, and a little to bottom of skirt near hem.
- minor catches to the fabric at back
- small darker shade spot/mark to bodice
- sleeves are very fine, undamaged but very slight pulling to weave as shown
Overall it's a good example of a century old item!
