vintage c.1950s cotton velvet mustard velvet trapeze shaped evening or opera coat with ruched collar
A rich mustard or old gold coloured trapeze shaped evening coat, in a soft cotton velvet. The overall style and cut certainly dates it to the 1950s, however the suspended ruched collar is quite reminiscent of the 1920s/30s, and wouldn't look out of place worn over a slightly earlier gown. It's a lovely timeless piece of clothing!
Easy fit three self fabric covered button fastening to front, raglan sleeves with turn back cuffs, and vertical welt pockets. lined throughout in a tonal rayon satin. No makers label, so can only assume custom made as it appears to be commercially manufactured.
It's a little imperfect on closer inspection (various small marks and pressure marks to velvet, and small worn hole), but overall initial impression is still good. Please see photographs and condition report below.
Measures: Flexible cut, shown unclipped on a UK8 mannequin, but approx up to a UK14? depending on desired fit. Could be worn by smaller as loose fitting.
Actual Bust 48" flat
Length from nape to hem 42"
Sleeves are 3/4 length.
Structurally sound, but there are some patchy marks in particular to the lower right front, and one small fray. There is also a mark adjacent to the middle button, a fine pen? mark to back, various other very small flaws.
The lining is slightly discoloured (fade) to bottom. One small area of restitching to inner side seam, hard to see. Underarms are fine.
I initially had it dry cleaned and it did nothing for any of the marks, so I cracked and carefully hand washed.. which did actually remove a few marks! I would happily wear it as is, and they aren't all glaringly obvious but definitely there.. please see photos.
